How I Used Reverse Psychology to Get My Ex Back

Breakups are rough. We’ve all been there—those endless nights of overthinking, scrolling through old photos, and resisting the urge to send a “let’s talk” text.

When my relationship ended, I went through all the stages: denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, and then… curiosity. I started wondering if there was a way to get my ex back, but I knew I needed to approach it differently. That’s when I decided to give reverse psychology a shot.

Now, before you start imagining some devious master plan, let me clarify: this wasn’t about manipulation. It was more about changing the dynamics between us, breaking old patterns, and making both of us realize what we truly wanted.

      Here’s how it went down.

Step 1: Letting Go (Sort of)

The first thing I did was take a step back. I stopped reaching out, avoided places I knew my ex would be, and focused on myself. This wasn’t easy, trust me. But here’s the thing: by not clinging to the relationship, I gave us both space to breathe. It allowed me to clear my head and figure out what I really wanted, and it made my ex wonder why I wasn’t chasing after them like they might have expected.

Surprisingly, this shift had an immediate effect. My ex started checking in, subtly at first—liking an old photo on Instagram, sending a “just saw something that reminded me of you” text. It was like a small hook, testing the waters to see if I’d bite. But I didn’t—at least, not right away.

Step 2: Living My Best Life

The next step was all about genuinely enjoying my life. I picked up old hobbies, spent time with friends, and shared my adventures on social media—not in a way that screamed “look at me,” but just enough to show that I was moving on and having fun. It wasn’t just for show; I genuinely started to feel better, more confident, and more in control of my own happiness.

This shift in energy was palpable. My ex started to see me differently—not as the heartbroken person they left, but as someone vibrant, independent, and yes, a little mysterious. It’s amazing how appealing someone becomes when they’re genuinely happy and not consumed by what others think.

Step 3: A Little Push and Pull

This is where the reverse psychology kicked in. When my ex reached out, I kept the conversations light and friendly but didn’t let them slip into old patterns. I didn’t jump at every invitation to talk or hang out. I’d agree to meet up but only on my terms and kept the encounters brief and positive.

By not immediately falling back into our old dynamic, I created a sense of intrigue. My ex started to wonder if they’d made the right decision. Instead of me trying to win them back, they were the ones trying to figure out how to get back into my life. It was a subtle shift, but incredibly powerful.

      Step 4: The Unexpected Confession

Finally, after a few weeks of this back-and-forth, my ex came right out and said it—they missed me and wanted to give things another shot. They admitted that seeing me thrive on my own made them realize what they’d lost. But here’s the kicker: by that point, I was no longer desperate to get back together. I had to genuinely consider whether getting back together was what I wanted.

In the end, we did reconcile, but it was on completely different terms. We were both more aware of what we wanted, and the relationship became healthier and more balanced.

      The Takeaway

Reverse psychology isn’t some magic trick to get your ex back. It’s about reclaiming your own sense of self, creating healthy boundaries, and giving both of you the space to reassess the relationship. If you’re considering using it, remember it only works if you’re truly ready to let go and focus on your own happiness first.

If that sounds like you, then why not give it a try? And if you’re looking for more tips on relationships or ways to boost your confidence, check out some of the resources I’ve found helpful. You never know—they might just make all the difference.

So that’s my story—how I used a little reverse psychology to get my ex back, and more importantly, how I found myself in the process.
